Mark 10:8 – February 25, 2022

and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Mark 10:8 NABRE

Jesus is challenged by religious leaders about divorce. Moses allowed a bill of divorce, a way for the woman to be freed from her obligation to her husband and allow her to remarry when her husband repudiated her, it gave her a way to live. In a society where woman have no rights it was a compassionate way, allowing woman to connect with a man and be safe. Jesus says Moses allows this bill of divorce because sinful people are hard hearted, men do not stay with their wives and so Moses provides a means for community to exist and these broken connections mended. Jesus though points back to the beginning. In the beginning God made man and woman and made them one flesh, no longer two but one. This is God’s plan without sin.

Once sin enters the world an exception is required for a society to function. Jesus however lifts sin, bringing the world back to a place where two are made one. We know this because Jesus Himself tells us, He and the Father, both sinless, are one (John 10:30.) In fact Jesus’ teaches the kingdom of God is to make us one with God and one with one another. Connecting spouses is a means to experience this oneness even in a sinful humanity, a witness to the unity God wants with us and among all humanity. Marriage is the model God desires for us to know love, with Him and with everyone. The kingdom of God which is available here and now is a consciousness of unity, not only between spouses but between humans with God and humans with one another. The bond of this unity is love and it is available because Jesus brings this message of love and the example of the kingdom of God.

Can you imagine spousal love with God and every other being? Do you know deep uniting love?

The kingdom of God is a consciousness of unity, not only between spouses but between humans with God and humans with one another. The bond of this unity is love and it is available because of Jesus. Click To Tweet
