Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and are given in marriage;” Luke 20:34 NABRE
Jesus is questioned about the coming age and marriage, in particular, if one woman becomes a widow and remarries, who is her husband in the coming age. Jesus acknowledges there is marriage in this age. We are made for intimacy and bonds of connection; we search for love. The love we need most is the love of God our creator, but because of a sinful nature we are separated from God. Therefore we connect with one another, marriage is the bonding covenant of two with the intention to become one. This bond of love is an act of self-giving. In all aspects of our life we should desire to give to our spouse, to sacrifice self in providing for our spouse. This love is intended to show us a glimpse of how God loves us and how we desire to be loved by God. Marriage is a bond strong enough to contain all aspects of life including sexual intimacy and bearing fruit. It is why two become one and bring new people into the world, we hold them close until they are ready to find the kind of bonded love only two people can give each other.
But, in the coming age we are not separated from God and our love is fulfilled through God’s love and our reciprocal love for God. In the coming age we don’t need marriage to show us glimpses of what it is like to be loved by God we readily have God’s full love. We live in a communion with the One who is all things and we have no need to seek love outside God. In the coming age there is no marriage but in this age the bond of a covenant relationship exists to show us the path to the fullness of the love we truly desire. We are made for love by Love, which we receive fully in the fullness of God.
Do you love one person greater than all others? Can you imagine God’s love for you?
