Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. John 2:22 NABRE
Jesus takes action in the temple, pushing out the marketing and profiteering, declaring God’s house not a marketplace. He is challenged and asked for a sign and in His response He triggers connections in the minds of His disciples to text in the Hebrew Scriptures about the Messiah and in particular the death and resurrection of the Messiah. It is when Jesus is raised from the dead that these connections are made in the minds of His disciples, most likely with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Jesus speaking at the Last Supper, tells His disciples, “The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name-he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you.” (John 14:26) With the Holy Spirit’s guidance this passage is about the realization Jesus fulfills the role of Messiah as foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus is at the center of the divine fulfillment and should be worshiped as the One sent by God, told to the fathers of the Hebrew community.
It is the Hebrew Scriptures which lay the foundation for an understanding of the Messiah. Jesus doesn’t come to eliminate the Hebrew Scriptures but to fulfill them. It is good to understand the journey taken by the Hebrew community, making Jesus’ incarnation at the precise right time. We should also recognize God works in the corporate community. The Hebrew people have been chosen by God to recognize the Messiah and allow the Messiah’s presence to become known by the whole world. We are all chosen, we should think of God desiring the entire corporate community, all people, not simply individuals.
Do you study the Hebrew Scriptures? Are you aware God wants everyone saved?
