And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.” Luke 11:46 NABRE
Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees and scholars of the law in a not very complimentary fashion. He says woe to you Pharisees, who worry about little things like tithes on herbs, who take seats of honor and who keep yourselves clean but do nothing to help the people. In response a scholar takes umbrage with Jesus and Jesus says, woe to you scholars of the law, you impose burdens on the people but do nothing to lift a finger in help. The scholars make it more difficult for the people to live holy lives and don’t seem to care how the people live purely or how they live in the long run. Jesus’ words serve as a reminder for those who teach in His name we must also assist and accompany those who we teach. If we bring people to Jesus and help them know the way to become holy, if they discover there are difficult choices to be made, we must stand with those we have brought to Jesus so they are not alone. In reality it might be better for someone to never meet Jesus and live a life of sin and debauchery, it doesn’t come with the knowledge of what it means to love and serve others, which is not easy way. To be a disciple means we live like Jesus who ultimately died on the cross for the kind of life He lived. We too are to pick up a cross and carry it every day as are those who we bring to the community of Jesus. It is not an easy way, but it is righteous.
If we are leading people to Jesus we cannot abandon them. It is never holy to tell people the rules and then judge them for breaking them. Stand with others, serve them and lead them to a holy life.
Do you take responsibility for those you convert? Do you look to your teachers for help in the Christian life?
