He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” Luke 10:2 NABRE
Jesus has sent the Twelve out to share the message of the kingdom of God, now Jesus sends out seventy (plus) to share the message of peace. Jesus has come to bring peace to all and He wants to get that word out. Jesus sends disciples without anything for the journey, He expects them to accept the hospitality of the people in the towns they visit and He expects they will be welcome, but if not, they should leave the town and shake the dust from their feet. Before going Jesus requests His disciples pray for more laborers to harvest the abundance of souls available for harvesting. Jesus knows there are many without shepherds, many who have not heard of the kingdom of God and Jesus desires to reach beyond the Israelite community into the Gentile community. The message of the kingdom of God is for all nations and Jesus knows many will have to speak to share the word from Jesus or one of His disciples. Their pray is said before they leave, it demonstrates their journey has a twofold hope; one to evangelize and share the message and two to energize certain other people to go themselves and share the message of the kingdom of God.
We read the stories of Jesus training His disciples and their taking His message far and wide. How many others who have not been written about have also shared about the kingdom of God? We are called to be laborers. We are not required to be an ordained minister to share the message of Jesus, in fact ordinary followers who live doing the will of the Father may have more influence on others than those who are ordained and live a special pastoral ministry. Be a laborer, harvest for the Lord.
Do you share the word of God? How?
