Luke 10:16 – October 1, 2021

Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me. Luke 10:16 NABRE

Jesus is sending His disciples out to share the message of the kingdom of God. He provides instruction before they go and He has this message for them about they being His emissary. When someone is sent, say an ambassador for example, they go in the name of the one who sent them. A country prime minister, king or president sends ambassadors to foreign countries as their representative and they speak on behalf of the prime minister, king or president. Jesus is saying the same thing to His disciples. They go in His name, so when people listen to His disciples they are listening to Jesus. When they reject His disciples they are rejecting Jesus. Jesus also reminds them that He too has been sent, He is an emissary for His Father. So rejecting a disciple of Jesus is rejecting Jesus along with the One who sent Him, His Father, God. It is how authority works for missionaries, being sent in the name of God means speaking for God. Of course this comes with a great responsibility, it requires living in the will of God and honoring God with all that is spoken.

Every Christian is sent to bring a message of the kingdom of God to others. Claiming to be a disciple or follower of Jesus means we are responsible in speaking for Jesus and recognizing that those who listen to us are listening to Jesus. We must know as Christians all we say and do reflects on the one who sends us, which in turn reflects on God. If we live knowing every action we perform and every word we speak is a reflection on God and is supported by God, how selective will we be in what we do and say?

Do you believe you are sent by Jesus to share a message of the kingdom of God? Is there anything more important than speaking for Jesus?
