And all were astonished by the majesty of God. While they were all amazed at his every deed, he said to his disciples, Luke 9:43 NABRE
Jesus is traveling and a large crowd forms around Him. A man asks Jesus to cast out a demon from his son. Jesus does so returning the boy to his father. The crowd is astonished and they give glory to God. Jesus often points to God as the One who deserves the glory and the crowd seems to see God in this casting out of the demon. Jesus amazes with every deed He performs and yet He is more interested in speaking to His disciples. Jesus always makes a point to not rest in the adulation of the people who are astonished and amazed about all he does. Jesus cures a boy with a demon, He heals many and He feeds many, but we never read about or see Jesus taking a bow. For Jesus all glory goes to God and the manner in which Jesus desires a show of gratefulness for good deeds is to do the will of the Father. We can recognize an interesting moment, the crowd is astonished and amazed yet Jesus only wants to speak to His disciples about His upcoming arrest. He tells them, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” (Luke 9:44)
We get a glimpse at how the mind of Jesus works. He heals and the crowd raves about what He has done and all He has done, even recognizing that it is God who is amazing; but Jesus focuses on what is ahead, what is next, what is my mission and He guards against being pulled off mission by accolades, or anything for that matter. We must embrace the idea God does the good, we are instruments. Human applause has no real worth but fulfilling God’s mission will bring more and more glory to God.
Do you like to hear adulation? Are you pulled off tasks by compliments?
