Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone. John 6:15 NABRE
John shares a story of Jesus feeding over five-thousand, a miraculous event and a story told, or one similar, by each of the gospel writers. In the story five loaves and two fish are offered by a young boy which Jesus uses to feed all present with twelve baskets of leftover fragments collected. Having experienced the feeding miracle, the crowd immediately concludes Jesus is the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world. They believe Jesus is the messianic prophet like Moses. There is a comparison of Jesus feeding miracle and Moses calling down manna in the desert, which fed the Jews for many years as they sojourned from Egypt to the Promised Land. A manna miracle may be a sign of the messiah coming to bring salvation and honor to the Jews. Jesus recognizes the crowd’s reaction and He is aware that His time has not yet come, so evading the crowds lifting Him up to a place of honor, Jesus withdraws into the mountains alone. It is not clear reading the gospels how much Jesus knows about His future and the leader’s plans to destroy Him, but we read over and over Jesus knows when His time will come. Jesus will often say it is not my time, or my hour has not yet come; as though He is waiting for a specific time to begin his final and complete revelation.
Jesus is focused and aware of His mission, He will conclude in a very specific way, at a very specific time. Jesus never lets anything dissuade Him from His mission. We should have the same discipline. It is easy to be distracted or pulled away from our true mission. We must learn the same discipline of Jesus and stay on course.
Will you know when it is your time of revelation? Are you easily distracted from your mission?
