They cried out, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?” Matthew 8:28 NABRE
Jesus is traveling with His disciples into predominantly Gentile territory, a land with very few fellow Jews. As He travels down the road two men possessed with demons came out of the tombs, they were so savage no one travelled this road. The demons have supernatural knowledge and immediately recognized Jesus as the Son of God. They fear the Son of God has come to judge them and send them “… into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41) It is significant that evil recognizes and fears Jesus immediately. Jesus is all good and evil cannot exists where all good exist. Knowing that Jesus will not allow them to continue to possess the bodies of the two men they possess, they ask to be sent into swine until the time of their judgement is upon them. Because of this short passage we know evil does exists, there will be a time when evil will be judged and there is an appointed time for the end of all evil, with Jesus the victor. We know about this victory as we hear from Jesus that evil is driven out (John 12:31.) The hope of every Christian is good triumphs, quite possibly the greatest message Jesus has shared by the time of His death and resurrection. Jesus defeats evil by giving Himself for others.
Hearing these demons speak about Jesus as Son of God with such confidence is a reason to reflect on our faith. Are we as positive about knowing the Son of God as these demons are when they see Him? If we have the confidence of these demons we will live a life of thanks and gratefulness. Knowing Jesus we have hope and we should be confident in the outcome humanity will experience.
Do you always know the Son of God when you meet Him? Are you hopeful about the end of all things?
