cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Luke 1:42 NABRE
In the opening chapters of Luke’s Gospel we read of an Angel appearing to a girl named Mary and informing her she will be the mother of the Son of the Most High. The angel informs Mary her cousin Elizabeth is six months pregnant. Accepting the angels message Mary makes haste to visit her cousin. Scholars will speak about how Mary is greeted by Elizabeth, who in the Spirit recognizes the significance of Mary’s pregnancy, interpreting a great theological encounter, Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant, and will be forever known as the Mother of God. I am touched by these two mother’s. Mary runs to help, hearing of her cousin’s pregnancy, knowing she has been struggling, unable to have a child, now through the hand of God her motherhood dream is fulfilled. The future mother in Mary wants to be with her cousin. Mary makes a three day journey to help Elizabeth, and hoping to be with someone who understands Mary’s news. Mary’s conception is going to be challenged, she will be ridiculed and thought of as sinful. Elizabeth understands and she assures Mary immediately. She declares that through the hand of God Mary has been blessed and the baby in her womb has been blessed. These words assure mother to be Mary, she is not alone, someone understands, her decision to become a mother is supported.
Motherhood does not get the recognition it deserves. So much of our story comes from our mother. After nine months of pregnancy most mothers deliver a child they never want to be without. Mary and Elizabeth are famous mothers, who have found grace, like them every mother deserves a blessing spoken over them.
Can you imagine your mother being the mother of God? What are those special mother memories you enjoy?
