But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. John 16:6 NABRE
Jesus has told His disciples He is their friend, He has told them they will be hated because of Him and He has told them they will be expelled from their community because of the work they will do in His name. He tells them again He must go to the One who sent Him and not one of them asks where He is going. Jesus is empathetic, and knows they are sad, filled with grief in their hearts He says, because they are losing their teacher, master, and friend. Life with Jesus has changed them, they looked forward to being with Him and each day was met with excitement and challenge. This is true for all who call Jesus friend and travel doing Jesus’ mission. Jesus knows the hearts of the disciples, not only in this moment of grief but always. Jesus also knows our hearts. Jesus understands human nature well (John 2:25.) Jesus who is fully human and fully divine is able to look into the heart of each of us and know who we truly are.
It is the heart that wants to be loved, to care for others, that leads us to be a person of kindness, this is what Jesus knows about us. We are led astray, human nature is often a sinful nature, leading us to do selfish things, greed often forces us towards a lack of generosity, pride forces us to react badly when we are not the center of attention. But in all the things that happen in our life we have a God who walks with us and knows our heart. A God willing to weep with us, to hold us and to give everything for us. This is why we follow God, who especially knows our hearts, often better than we know it ourselves. Maybe you don’t meet other Christian’s with similar qualities as Jesus, perhaps you and I could be a Christian who does model Jesus.
Do you follow Jesus? Who knows your heart fully?
