Jesus while teaching shares that keeping His command we become His friend. Many teach we should have a personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus wants our friendship, calling us friend if we follow His commands. Jesus is not requesting anything unusual, we honor friends, give them respect, lift them up, and encourage friends. It should not be difficult to be Jesus friend by honoring His commands, we would do the same for any friend. Friendship with Jesus is extraordinary; He is fully human, fully divine, all is created for Him, all is created through Him (Colossians 1:16.) Many sayings are attributed to Jesus, do not judge, take my yoke and learn from me, we can grow rich learning and employing Jesus’ sayings. But Jesus command is to love; love God and love others – love enemies, love as we desire to be loved, love one another. Being Jesus friend can be easy, love.
However, people challenge us, particularly people closest to us, they can easily push us towards anger and challenge our peacefulness. Doing this we might not be able to love them. But love cannot be easily cast off, Jesus speaks of love that is permanent. Our challenge is to love from the first to the last, from the beginning to the end, from the Alpha to the Omega. If we are so easily able to hold back our love, then actually we didn’t love as we were asked. When we love, it is unshakable. Find a way to love, to hold on to others, to lift them up, encourage them, to put them first! Jesus says, there is no greater love than to give up your life for a friend. Jesus declares it and then does it. Love should be like an impermeable container, never allowing a single drop of unlove through.
