Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify to me.” John 10:25 NABRE
Jesus was attending a special feast called the Dedication which celebrates the rededication of the temple after a revolt which took the temple back from pagan gentiles who were desecrating it. It was a feast of eight days, which celebrates the temple sanctuary candle burning for eight days even though there was only enough oil to allow it to burn for one day. A simple miracle that those who believe give all glory to God. At this feast Jesus is preaching in an area of the temple and is challenged to give a sign if He really is the Messiah. Jesus responds to those asking for a sign, you do not believe, He is doing the works of His Father which testify on His behalf to who He is. He challenges them saying they do not believe. They stand ready to stone Him to death but He escapes their attempts. Those who follow Jesus have faith. All the signs seen by non-believers have simple explanations while believers see them as the greatest signs of all time. Without faith, Jesus’ signs, the works of His Father, go unrecognized. Not believing keeps us from seeing what is clear.
Belief or unbelief carries the power to stand with or against someone, this is proven over and over again. Belief is why one group selects a politician as a great hero and another group thinks she/he belongs in jail. Believing is everything. Believing in our own abilities often gives us the fortitude to be a success, to win the race, to accomplish our dreams. Jesus doesn’t want us to depend on signs, He wants us to depend on faith in Him. If we do we will be united with Him and eternally blessed. If we do not, what we do in life won’t ever allow us to see miracles.
What do you believe? Do you need signs to have faith in Jesus?
Jesus doesn't want us to depend on signs, He wants us to depend on faith in Him. If we do we will be united with Him and eternally blessed. If we do not, what we do in life won’t ever allow us to see miracles.
