The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven [is above all]. John 3:31 NABRE
John the Evangelist is summarizing the previous verses, Jesus’ teaching with Nicodemus and an encounter with John the Baptist. Here he reiterates Jesus message of being born from above. John speaks of being from above, lifted up in glory after being baptized in the Spirit by Jesus. He contrast this with coming from heaven, the abode of God and saints. When we are lifted up in glory by Jesus we are elevated above earthly things and those who speak and live of earthly acts. Jesus has spoken about being “lifted up” which can mean being exalted, which He is, ultimately. Others see a connection to Jesus being lifted up on the cross.
Much of the message of Jesus has a theme of the last, being first. Being lifted up is an indication of Jesus effect on those who follow Him. Even Paul writes about the foolish shaming the wise and the weak shaming the strong (1 Corinthians 1:27.) Being lifted up like Jesus brings us to the kingdom of God, joy filled and exalted. Jesus looks to Moses lifting a bronze serpent in the desert as a means for those who sinned against God to repent and be healed (Numbers 21:7-9.) Changing our ways we are lifted and healed.
Do you want to be from above? Do you believe you will be exalted in Jesus?
