Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” John 20:17 NABRE
Mary Magdala remained outside the tomb after Peter and the Beloved Disciple returned home; she was weeping. She meets angels, asking where Jesus has been taken and then Jesus Himself appears to her and she thinks He is the gardener. It is when He says her name, that she recognizes He is her Rabbi, her Teacher and Master. She addresses Him as she did before His death and she reaches out to hold Him. Speaking her name has opened her eyes to the resurrection and all Jesus’ teaching before He was placed on the cross. But Jesus is no longer the same, He has risen from death. He enters the tomb Jesus the earthly teacher and He exists the tomb the Christ who Paul says, “… is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17) Christ is not the earthly man but the Universal being in whom all things are. Telling Mary to “stop holding on to me,” He is letting her know that everything has changed. He is to sit at the right hand of the Father, not walk earth, human and divine. He sends Mary to share the news He is going to His Father and their Father, His God and their God. We are in Christ and Christ in us, a new relationship after Jesus’ death makes us all children of God because of our relationship with Christ.
Mary is given a mission, as we each are given a mission. We first come to know Jesus, learn what His life means and the mission He came to found. With Christ’s relationship with the Father, we become children of God and are called to share in His mission.
Are you aware you are a child of God? What does it mean Christ is holding together all things?
