Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. Ephesians 6:13 NABRE
Paul in closing the letter to the community at Ephesus is exhorting them to be strong and resist evil. Paul compares the ability to be strong to the protective and offensive gear of a solider, very much like the Roman solider that would have been quite visible to most people at that time. Paul uses the example of armor to indicate we need to have spiritual protection. Paul compares several pieces of armor to attitudes the Christian should use in defending and fighting against evil. The spiritual protection we need comes from God’s word and guidance; we are trustful, honest and keep God’s word even when it might be to our disadvantage. We can say we are clothing ourselves in God’s righteousness. We live behaviors we are willing to let others see, not going to inappropriate websites, not conducting dishonest business practices, avoiding gossip or criticism of others, knowing truth and living as truthful people. Evil enters our life in small doses, small lies perhaps, or dishonestly keeping what is not ours to keep. We never jump into a sinful life full force, we walk toward it reactively. The major practice of overcoming evil is through basic Christian attitudes, emphasizing repentance, forgiveness and practicing virtues. Paul makes the real comparison of fighting evil to fighting an enemy which a solider would never attempt without the appropriate training or gear.
Daily prayer is a training tool, declaring allegiance to God wraps us in protection, a daily regiment to keep us ready. We must build up strength, living in God’s word. Daily prayer for healing and God’s grace keeps the Spirit strong in us.
What do you do to strengthen spiritual muscle? What armor do you wear?
