Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Hebrews 5:1 NABRE
The letter to the Hebrews discusses the priesthood, describing it in the context of the Hebrew Scriptures, which has long, minutely detailed sections devoted to the priesthood. Matters that may seem inconsequential are detail minutely, including vestments, rites of ordination, along with other details about construction of the tabernacle and the sacred furnishings. The priesthood was God’s gift for the people, making it possible for Him to dwell in their midst. The priest was the mediator between God and His people. We see in the quoted verse critical characteristics of the priest, the priest comes from the people, the priest is entirely appointed by God, the priest is the bridge between God and His people and the he offers gifts and sacrifices on behalf of the people. The priest is set apart from the people, a special representative of God to the people. Jesus’ transforms the priesthood, as He is a High Priest forever. Jesus is not separated from humanity, Jesus in fact is created like humans in every respect and becomes a merciful and faithful High Priest. We no longer need a mediator, God’s new covenant is written in our hearts; God has become our God and we are God’s people (see Hebrews 8:10.)
Instead of offering sacrifice, Jesus becomes the sacrifice so that no other sacrifice is ever needed for God. God remembers our sins and evil doing no more and Jesus has become a High Priest who puts us directly in touch with God. We no longer require a priest as mediator, from humanity, representing us before God with gifts. Jesus has done this once and for all and now we have direct connection with God.
Do you connect with God? Are you grateful for Jesus final fulfillment of priesthood?
