Philippians 2:14-15 – January 17, 2021

Do everything without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like lights in the world, Philippians 2:14-15 NABRE

Paul writing to the community at Philippi is challenging them to be obedient. God has done a good work in people and we should be coworkers with God. Paul challenges the reader to do everything without grumbling or question. This could be a memory of the Israelites in the desert who test and challenge God. Complaining and testing God can be seen as resistance to the will of God and the liberating work that God is trying to do in our midst. Followers of Jesus should live community life without questioning, though Paul would say questions are ok, but it is contentiousness that Paul objects to. Christians are to be innocent and blameless children of God though we live in the midst of sinners. All people are made in the image of God and after baptism we are welcomed into a new kind of relationship with God; we are children. Though we are among sinners we are to live without blemish, in right relationship with God. Our life should become progressively freer from sin, without tarnished motives, ready to love and serve with a pure heart.

Christians are known as happy and joyful people. This is not by accident, we live with a message that is about doing everything without grumbling, to recognize we are in a special relationship with God and that in the end we have a merciful Father who will give us life.

Do you complain often? Are you able to see good in everything?
