Mark 2:17 – January 16, 2021

Jesus heard this and said to them [that], “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Mark 2:17 NABRE

Mark is telling the story of Jesus calling a disciple whose occupation is tax collector. Tax collectors are despised and seen as sinners. Jesus calling a disciple who is a tax collector is controversial. Many see Jesus’ call this disciple and then have dinner with him. To have a meal with someone in biblical terms is to solidify the relationship, this person is much more than an acquaintance. This causes the religious authorities to talk among themselves; saying this man eats with sinners. They are essentially questioning Jesus’ authority. How could Jesus be a man of God if He spends such quality time with sinners, chances are He is a sinner too. Jesus hears them and challenges them to understand that His mission is to sinners. Those who are not sick do not need a healer. Jesus is a healer, He heals physically but more importantly He heals spiritually, providing the means for people to get right with God. Does this mean Jesus is not here for the religious authorities, absolutely not, we are all sinners and all need a healer. His mission is not to vindicate those who keep the law and condemn the rest; rather it is to offer healing which all people need, healing from the brokenness of sin, the most notable are sins of pride and judgement.

We are sinners and have a healer in Jesus. We must know we need healing and seek the healer while we are able. Jesus came for each one of us, take advantage of his mission to heal.

Do you know you are a sinner? Do you know your sins?

We are sinners and have a healer in Jesus. We must know we need healing and seek the healer while we are able. Jesus came for each one of us, take advantage of his mission to heal. Click To Tweet
