He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, Colossians 1:13 NABRE
Paul (who includes Timothy in exhorting the listener in this letter) tells the community how grateful he is for the Colossian Christians. He wants to have them focus on the knowledge of God’s will and on spiritual wisdom and understanding, wanting the reader to know how to apply the truth of God to daily life. Paul declares the Spirit has been given to Christian believers so they can increasingly take on the character of the Messiah. Paul desires that all believers live in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to God, in every good work, bearing fruit. Living according to the gospel causes people to flourish which in turn delights and glorifies God. Paul prays the reader not only know God’s will but have the strength and power to do God’s will. Paul then reflects that we have been delivered from the power of darkness. For Paul there is no spiritually neutral living, there is the life of darkness and the life of Christ, we are in one or the other. Becoming a Christian is a transference from one to the other. Our conversion allows us to live free and hopefully in a community of believers that are aware together of Jesus as master of all. Paul will write “For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth … all things were created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16) All believers share a common hope of life with Jesus and through the power provided finding they are able to love and forgive one another.
Do you live in the power of darkness or in the kingdom of the beloved Son? Believers must know God’s will and do God’s will daily. We must pray for spiritual wisdom and understanding, so we may apply this power to the life we live.
Do you have spiritual understanding? Do you ask for wisdom?
