for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. Luke 21:15 NABRE
Jesus has been speaking to His disciples about an upheaval at the fall of Jerusalem, He also tells them about end times and not knowing the time. During trials those in authority will persecute Jesus’ disciples. In God’s plan this will give the disciples the opportunity to provide testimony on Jesus behalf. In Acts (e.g. 4:8-13) Luke describes the fulfillment of these words with the apostles even rejoicing that they suffer on account of Jesus’ name. The disciples will be tracked down in synagogues, put into prison, led before kings and governors in Jesus name. As they make their defense before these authorities they are given wisdom such that their speaking to opponents will surprise them and keep them from responding sufficiently in return. In these circumstances the disciples are taught by the Holy Spirit, words provided at the moment they are necessary. Jesus even exhorts the disciples not to prepare or try to plan a defense, trust that the words will be made available in the moment they are needed. It requires a great amount of trust and faith, we all like to think about our defense when we are going to be required to speak before an authority. Acts is filled with examples of the disciples’ response surprising and making adversaries powerless. Jesus fulfills His promises.
We must trust Jesus in the moment, the Holy Spirit will give us wisdom in the moment. It is an important lesson. God is present in the moment. We shouldn’t look for God in the past or the future of our lives, we should be present, dwell in the present and have joy of the knowledge of the present moment. Jesus is with you now, and now and now … don’t look for Him where He is not.
Do you live in the moment? Do you trust Jesus for wisdom?
