Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Luke 10:19 NABRE
Jesus has sent out seventy-two disciples preparing the towns and villages to meet Jesus. Sending the disciples ahead of His visit Jesus is hoping the people will begin to be transformed to the message of the gospel. Jesus is teaching them now to be apostles for the time Jesus is no longer with them, it is a lesson in how to meet and greet others bringing Jesus’ name and message to all the world. Jesus gave them power over the full force of the enemy and nothing can harm them. Therefore they have nothing to fear, they can bring a message of peace which resonates in their fearless hearts. Jesus describes this authority as the ability to tread upon serpents and scorpions. These creatures are named often in scripture when danger is present; yet in each case God guides the people through this trouble. Here Jesus says even treading upon these creatures will bring no harm. We can imagine these creatures as a euphemism for the evil one. Jesus will tell the disciples He has seen Satan fall from the sky, a defeated seducer, tempter. Somehow we can imagine the work of the disciples has had an effect on evil. The disciples have returned rejoicing declaring demons are subject to the name of Jesus. This is an example of faith and living Jesus’ message of peace providing power over temptation, having a global impact. If we trust in the name of Jesus we can defeat evil and tread on what tries to make us fearful. Trusting in Jesus name is the defeat of fear everywhere.
We too have power to tread upon evil and overcome Satan. Depending on prayer and faith, Jesus’ message should fill us with courage and trust, crushing fear!
