We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. 1 John 4:16 NABRE
In this letter John makes abundantly clear that love originates in God, because God is love, which God manifests in His Son Jesus Christ who dies for us. More than anything, Jesus birth, life, death and resurrection show God loves us so much He will do anything for us. For God love required He enter humanity and live as we live, showing us how to love and what it means to love. In writing God is love John turns to each of us to renew the call to love one another; if God is love and loves us we must also love one another. We participate in the love of God by caring for one another, both spiritually and materially and by being ready even to die for one another. John will remind us that no one has ever seen God so for God to be seen it must be through the practicing of Christian love for one another and others. John tells us love is brought to perfection (completion, culmination) when we show this love to one another. In the quoted verse John is telling Christ believers they have come to know experientially God’s love for us and to believe in this love because we believe God, the Father, sent His Son out of love for the world. John repeats God is love and if we abide (remain) in the love of God we remain in God Himself and in fact God remains in us. Since God is love, if we abide in love, then we also abide in God. We are one with God when we love.
Love is action, doing for others, lifting up the lowest, caring for one another. It is no good to lobby for the good if we don’t invest in others. If someone is naked and hungry and we say, “‘Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,’ but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?” (James 2:16)
Are you love? What is God?
Love is action, if someone is naked and hungry and we say, 'Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,' but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?
