to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation [of the world].” Matthew 13:35 NABRE
Jesus is teaching in parables. He has spoken about weeds among wheat, a mustard seed, yeast, teaching avoidance of wrong doing and remaining righteous. He references a passage that uses parable and He will announce what has been hidden from the foundation of the world. Jesus when speaking refers to the prophets quoting from Psalm 78, “I will open my mouth in a parable, unfold the puzzling events of the past.” (verse 2) Psalm 78 is a retelling of salvation history of the Chosen people, from what God did taking His people out of Egypt, to the raising of David an upright King. It is spoken by a wise man, who could have been a prophet, the entire history shows God’s power and mercy. Jesus’ incarnation provides us with a much longer view of salvation, particularly God’s plan for salvation by sending Jesus His Son. We might recognize Jesus expanding on the salvation story of Psalm 78, which told of God’s salvation to that point in history, but with Jesus’ coming God’s plan for salvation from the foundation of the world is completely revealed. Despite humanity’s nature to sin, God knew from creation He would send a savior, who would speak in parable and would die on the cross, rising again to undo the act of death put into action in the garden when the first humans ate from the tree that introduced death. Jesus resurrects life, divine and eternal life. From the beginning God had a plan and Jesus is announcing and then becomes the revelation of that plan.
Jesus brings God’s plan to completion, we are the recipients of that salvation plan and we have available to us the parables Jesus’ shared that announce the plan.
Do you like the parables? Do you see God’s plan?
