But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Matthew 13:23 NABRE
Jesus is teaching those listening about not only hearing God’s word but being affected by God’s word. It is a parable about a sower who represents God, the seed he is throwing, which represents the word of God and the places where the seed falls. The seed can fall on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns or in rich soil. Anything but the rich soil causes the seed to fail to create fruit. It is the seed that falls in the rich soil that forms deep roots and great growth. Jesus is teaching that those who are ready to hear the word of God, will receive it and it will grow in that person. They will hear the word, understand it and indeed will bear fruit. The word of God that is received by those who are ready and open, will change that person, they will be transformed, and their life will have an impact on others, in fact many others will be affected by them. Jesus indicates that those who bear fruit will yield hundred, sixty or thirty fold. This is significant, Jesus telling us that if we let the word of God grow in us we don’t have a one or two person impact, in fact we can impact one hundred different people, or sixty or even thirty. This happens because we are supported by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has the power to make a little from us become a huge impact for many.
Jesus is encouraging us to be ready to hear the word of God. Reading something like these scripture verses, or reading some form of bible plan, or just using bible verses in your prayer. The more time you can spend in the word the more ready you are for the word to transform you and you have an impact on others.
How do you read God’s word? Are you ready to impact others?
