Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever. Psalms 113:2 NABRE
This psalm begins the Hallel, a great prayer of praise from the Hebrew people to God. The Hallell remembers the great themes that are essential to Jewish faith. They include the exodus from Egypt, the splitting of the sea, the revelation at Mount Sinai, the resurrection of the dead and the great event of the advent of the Messiah. The Hallel is used in festivals and in the liturgy. The psalm shows that God treats the poor more generously than any just man, for His power is infinite. It begins with a call to praise the name of the Lord, followed by a proclaiming of God’s glory above the heavens, expressing awe. At the revelation of the “name” in these verses, we already get a sense of that mercy God has shown His people. He derives eternal praise from the whole world. Among all the words of revelation, there is one which is unique, the revealed name of God. God confides His name to those who believe in Him, he reveals Himself to them in His personal mystery. The gift of a name belongs to the order of trust and intimacy, knowing a name is paramount to knowing the person in biblical language. The Lord’s name is holy. For this reason we must not abuse it. We must keep in mind His name in silent, loving adoration. We will not speak His name except to bless, praise and glorify it.
The praise sung in this psalm is adopted by Mary the Mother of Jesus, the hand maid, or servant of the Lord, when, after the announcement of the Incarnation, she proclaims that the Lord exalted the lowly. We read in the Magnificat, “He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly.” (Luke 1:52) God’s name alone gives hope to all the earth.
Do you realize the significance of knowing God’s name? Do you use God’s name with respect and awe?
