Psalms 98:3 – May 9, 2020

He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Psalms 98:3 NABRE

The people are celebrating joy in song. This psalm begins with an invitation to sing to the Lord as praise for the great things He has done for Israel, it then calls on all the earth to join in with all solemnity and it ends by calling on nature, too, to praise the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth. This is a song mindful of all the great things the Lord has done in His steadfast love and faithfulness. The psalm opens with the Lord depicted as a victorious warrior, He saved His people during the exodus and by bringing them back from exile in Babylon. He acts in keeping with His covenant and all the people have seen what He has done. In the quoted verse we see God committed to Israel because of the merit of their forefathers, and God’s covenant promise. The Prophet Micah reads, “You will show faithfulness to Jacob, and loyalty to Abraham, As you have sworn to our ancestors from days of old.” (7:20) God acted with kindness to Abraham when He promised him the Holy Land. Because of this commitment of Divine kindness and faith, God will deliver Israel from the present exile and announce the advent of the Messiah. All the world witnesses God’s wonders and yet they refuse to accept His sovereignty. Only the House of Israel acclaimed God’s salvation and for this reason God always remembered to treat them with kindness and faith.

In time the Messiah comes and God now makes his kindness and salvation available to all nations. Through the witness of Jesus, the world, including the Gentile’s begin to come to God, the Father, kind and wonderful to all.

Do you recognize God’s sovereignty? Do you receive the kindness of God?
