For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day. John 6:40 NABRE
John in the long passage of chapter six is reaching a culmination speaking about those who will come to Jesus, through the Father, will never be rejected. Jesus strengthens this statement by saying He has come to do the will of the Father, not His own will and so therefore whatever the Father decides, those the Father chooses, will be welcome by Jesus. Jesus will not lose anything the Father has given Him, He will raise it on the last day. This statement He repeats in the quoted verse, “everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day.” Jesus makes a powerful claim, about all who see and believe, also about Himself as the one who will raise others, and as one who will be around on the last day, all according to the will of the Father. Jesus has power to raise others, He knows He will be present on the last day, however all glory and power belong to the Father, the one true God who with the Son and the Spirit are acknowledged as God, creator of everything and eternal. Jesus is Son to the Father and the Spirit is the power flowing between the Father and the Son and all of creation. What is said is from God and it is true.
Jesus has made this promise, eternal life. We cannot lose this gift, we can only walk away from it through our unbelief. If we believe we have life. Jesus on Easter walked out of the grave and using the same power will give us the ability to walk out of the grave as well. We cannot have any greater hope than what is promised.
Do you believe in the one sent by God? Do you believe the Son does the will of the Father?
