As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10 NABRE
Peter is writing to Christians and in the section of the letter with the quoted verse he is instructing them on how to act. Peter names three practices that all Christians should be practicing; to be serious and sober in prayer, to allow love to cover a multitude of sins and to be hospitable without grumbling. To be serious and sober in prayer is Peter’s reflection that God is answering prayer and that we should know what we desire of God and be serious in our approach to asking for things, always seeking God’s will not our own. We should be true minded and attentive to what we pray, not just babble on about everything and anything. Next Peter instructs us to allow love to cover a multitude of sins, which is a way of demonstrating our love for one another, overlooking things others may do that is offending to us. If we love someone we can overlook their misdeeds, and accept them as they are. Finally, to be hospitable likely speaks to welcoming those who come to the community in need or a desire to share in worship. If we are to spread the word of God, it will come through our openness to others and the sharing of our worship table with those unfamiliar with the ways of Christ.
Peter sums these three practices up by telling us to use our gifts to serve one another. Through the grace of God everyone has been provided gifts that will help glorify the Kingdom of God here on earth. If we want God to be glorified we should use our gifts to advance God’s message of prayer, love and hospitality. It is through our living like Christ that others will see a way to the Lord.
Can you live these three practices? Do you serve one another?
