God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth. John 4:24 NABRE
John is telling the story of Jesus journey through Samaria, including a stop to speak with a Samaritan woman, who eventually comes to faith because of what Jesus tells her. Their conversion is so powerful she evangelizes her entire village. It is a story of non-Jews coming to faith in Jesus. In the conversation the woman says she knows the Messiah is coming and He will tell them everything. Jesus responds to her saying, “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.” (John 4:26) Leading up to this admission Jesus told her the hour is coming when true worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth. Jesus goes on to say what we read in the quoted verse, “God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” Jesus told Nicodemus to see and enter the kingdom of God we must be “born of water and Spirit” (John 3:5) that we receive a new heavenly life through the Spirit in baptism. Jesus the incarnate word is truth, He testifies to the truth. To worship God we must know the truth and be animated by the Spirit. To worship God is no longer going to a place, our body is the temple, where we are truth and Spirit is in us. In other words we worship God with every action and deed of our lives, in quiet prayer, in a day’s work, in giving of our life to others. Worshipping God is everything we do, if we do it in truth and Spirit.
God wants us to know we are loved and that we can return love by offering all we do in worship to God. We don’t have to be on our knees, we can be driving our cars with God in mind, walking to work mindful of God, eating our meals mindful of God. If we declare our life is worshiping God, and live it in truth and Spirit, God is glorified.
How do you worship God? How do you live your day?
If we declare our life is worshiping God, and live it in truth and Spirit, God is glorified.
