Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done marvelous deeds. His right hand and holy arm have won the victory. Psalms 98:1 NABRE
This psalm begins with an invitation to sing to the Lord in celebration of the great things He has done for Israel. It then calls on all the earth to join in with all solemnity, and it ends by calling on nature, too, to praise the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth. All the great things the Lord has done for His people, mindful of His steadfast love and faithfulness, are the reasons for the praise offered in this psalm. The same divine actions are celebrated in the canticle spoken by Mary as she greets Elizabeth her cousin. The actions reach their climax in the sending of Jesus the Messiah, Son of God, through whom God’s love, and mercy are revealed to all people. In the opening verse the Lord is depicted as victorious, saving His people during the exodus, bringing them back from exile in Babylon. To praise God we are encouraged to sing, to create a new song for the Lord and sing of His marvelous deeds. It is through singing that the Lord is praised and those who worship in word and song are honoring this desire of God to be worshiped in song.
Who doesn’t like to be thanked for doing good for another? God wants to know that we know how He is leading us to good in our life and taking care of us in ways we may not even be aware. We should be constantly thanking God and worshiping Him so that He knows we are grateful. When we love, we show appreciation, we even show appreciation when there has not been any gift given, just to let the lover know we are thinking of them, always. God appreciates this same treatment.
Do you sing new songs to the Lord? Do you show appreciation for all God has done in your life?
