They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11 NABRE
We read in Matthew the story of magi that come to pay tribute to the new child born to Mary and Joseph. They are led to Him by a star that stops over the house where Mary is holding Jesus in her arms. Is this the same place where the baby is born or have they changed accommodations? We don’t know. It would have taken time for the magi to travel from the east. Magi is a term that was given to members of the Median and Persian priestly caste but later was extended to include those who possessed mystical knowledge as priests, astrologers, soothsayers and sages. The popular association with kings today can be associated with the notion of the kings who would bring gifts to King David. When they enter the home they prostrate themselves, they laid face down on the floor, as a great sign of divine worship. This worship further signifies that Jesus is a great King and that others like Herod who dismissed him failed to recognize him. The gifts they bring signify great gifts brought for a king. Frankincense used to incense in worship, myrrh and exotic spice and of course gold. Their paying homage and bringing such gifts are not only signifying Jesus is King of the Jews but He is King of the world.
Recognizing a divine Jesus is something we should learn from the example of the magi. To be divine, holy and from God has never been seen, we should make every effort to honor this King. This kind of honoring is unusual for us today, but never-the-less we should learn to honor God.
Do you see a small king in baby Jesus? Are you surprised God would come so vulnerable?
To be divine, holy and from God has never been seen, we should make every effort to honor this King.
