You shall be my people, and I will be your God. Jeremiah 30:22 NABRE
Jeremiah has gone through trouble, he watched the destruction of the city and the temple because the people would not trust in God, they would rather make alliances with other kingdoms and thus are defeated and their homes destroyed. In this section Jeremiah is proclaiming hope, in fact Jeremiah prophesizes a new covenant that will replace the one broken by the people’s repeated transgressions down the years. Christian writers draw attention to this new covenant, where God announces the covenant shall be made, it will be a light to all nations. The power and conviction derives from Jesus Christ crucified. This new covenant as we see in the quoted verse claims that the people are God’s and God is their God. God demonstrates there is nothing the people can do that God cannot forgive. Despite dishonoring their promises and breaking the covenant, God proudly claims them as His people. God claims we are His people through the fellowship we hold with Christ and each other. God announces commitment by claiming the people. God further establishes this new covenant, which says everyone will receive the law in their hearts and will be God’s people. God is committed and faithful. Jesus comes offering bread and wine, his body and blood, as a sign of the new covenant. It is not so much the law in the heart of the people as the love each has for the other and God, written in our hearts.
If we are God’s and God is ours, then there is nothing that will go wrong in our life. If we trust God, have faith in God and love God, we can depend on a life of security and joy. God can do anything and as His people will do anything, even sending His Son to humanity as proof of love.
Do you work to have a firm heart? Are you able to be patient in all matters?
If we trust God, have faith in God and love God, we can depend on a life of security and joy.
