Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19 NABRE
Jesus is teaching His disciples many things, from the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount which reads from chapter five of Matthew’s gospel. In this section Jesus teaches that it is more important to store up treasure in heaven than to accumulate wealth on earth. Whatever you accumulate in the world is something that will decay in the world or be left behind. Storing treasure in heaven allows us to receive that treasure when we arrive in heaven. In order to accumulate wealth on earth we tend to work for ourselves, build up a business or work a job that allows us to earn good money, perhaps investing that money and accumulating more. All the activity around this kind of treasure accumulation is self-centered, others may prosper through ancillary means, but the main benefactor is ourselves. This is not the way of God, God is for others. To accumulate wealth in heaven we must put others first, care for others, work to help others, lead others to God. This type of treasure is all based on good works, a good heart and a good relationship with God. In doing God’s will we store up treasure in heaven. Storing treasure in heaven allows us to receive riches and blessings from God on this earth and receive those stores of treasure when we pass through death to new life. The main theme of Jesus teaching on this topic is that we cannot serve two masters, one will suffer loss at the priority of the other.
Your life must be to seek God’s will, put others first, love others and by doing so we are acknowledging God as Master and serving Him. Serving God we are paid by heavenly treasure. Serve God, be rich.
Do you work for God or money? Do you put others first?
Your life must be to seek God's will, put others first, love others and by doing so we are acknowledging God as Master and serving Him.
