1 Corinthians 1:4-5 – November 22, 2019

I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge. 1 Corinthians 1:4-5 NABRE

Paul is opening his letter to the community at Corinth. It is a very lively community that writes to Paul about many problems that Paul addresses in his letter back to them. Paul opens with thanks, a good example for any community leader. Paul is thankful for the people of the community and wants them all to know of his appreciation. The spreading of the message of Jesus goes from person to person and without the people of the community the message could be lost and lives not enriched. But Paul also is thanking God for the grace He bestows on the community through Jesus Christ. God gives them enrichment in every way. They are a people who receive riches that help their community prosper and grow. Paul thanks God for all discourse, all speaking, every word they utter. The community will meet in assembles and they will speak God’s word to one another and in this speaking they are sharing the Spirit of God. Finally Paul is thankful for all knowledge God has given them. It is a special kind of knowledge where they know things, insights and mysteries, but also they have prophetic gifts, knowing only by the infusion of the Spirit that has a direct illumination about the community or the word of God. Paul sees all these gifts positively and as a grace from God. By thanking God he acknowledges to the people that all is from God and they should be thankful as well.

Are we thankful for the gifts we are given through the grace of God? Each day we should thank God for the riches we have, our ability to speak and influence others and the knowledge we have of God and the Spirit that allows us to illuminate others spiritual life.

Do you thank God each morning for all you have? Are you able to use your gifts to advance the kingdom of God?

Paul sees all gifts positively and as a grace from God. By thanking God he acknowledges to the people that all is from God and they should be thankful as well. Click To Tweet
