Now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever; my eyes and my heart shall be there always. 2 Chronicles 7:16 NABRE
King David in his waning years as king wanted to build a house for God who had watched over him and the people so faithfully. But God decided the temple would be built by David’s son Solomon. With the help of architects and artisans the temple was built in seven years around the tenth century B.C.E. When the temple was complete it was dedicated and God sent fire from heaven to commemorate the dedication. God promises He will dwell in this house for as long as the people are faithful and do not abandon God for other gods. Of course we know through history the people did not always trust God as they should and there were times when God allowed other rulers and their armies to take over and destroy the temple. God would restore the people after these times and they would rebuild the temple. Finally as Jesus predicted the temple was destroyed by the occupying Romans and was never rebuilt. The temple was the center of life for the Israelite’s. They would celebrate feasts and holidays by traveling to Jerusalem and offering prayer and sacrifice to God. It was the center of the Hebrew life until its final destruction.
We too build a special place for God in our hearts. We can invite God to dwell in our hearts as Solomon invited God to the dwell in temple. We should celebrate God’s presence in our house. Paul calls our bodies the temple of the Holy Spirit. We should think of it like the temple that God promised to have His eyes and heart on always. God faithfully watches His children. We can live a joyful life with God always with us.
Do you invite God to dwell in you? Do you treat you body as sacred space?
