1 John 2:5-6 – November 8, 2019

But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to live [just] as he lived. 1 John 2:5-6 NABRE

John In writing to his community is speaking about knowing God and being in union with God. John indicates the way we can be sure we know God is by keeping his commandments. John wants to be sure to provide a means to measure if we are in right relationship with God. John doesn’t just want us to “say” we are disciples of Jesus but we should have means to demonstrate our discipleship. John tells us keeping God’s word shows our love of God is perfected in us. Keeping God’s word is equivalent to keeping God’s commandments. God’s commandments include the Ten Commandments but the most important commands are to love God and love others, keeping these will include every other command God would want us to keep. But John just doesn’t want us to keep some law, we should hear God’s word, take it to heart and live God’s word in our everyday life. John goes on to say we can know we are in union with God if we live as Jesus lived. When we imitate Jesus then we are sure that we are in right relationship with God, keeping His commandments and being a witness to God’s perfect love. To live as Jesus lived is to live for others, to put others first and to sacrifice ourselves so that others may come to know the love of God and the life of Jesus.

People will only learn about Jesus if they see us living as Jesus lived. Jesus was irresistible because he did for others, putting himself after the needs and desires of others, this is what it takes to imitate Jesus. If we imitate Jesus will we live a better life and attract others to live like Jesus too!

Do you want to live as Jesus lived? Can you be a witness for others?
