No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. 1 John 4:12 NABRE
John is writing to his community about love. John makes it clear in this letter that love originates in God, because God is love. God expresses love manifestly in the gift of his Son who comes for all humankind. We must love one another, it is essential, but it is dependent on God’s prior love for us. John says if God loved us we must love one another. If we are to participate in Christ we must imitate Christ who gives His life for others. We cannot be a disciple of Christ if we do not love. John continues writing, no one has ever seen God. He makes this point because Jesus taught when we see Him we see the Father and when we see one another we see God in whose image we are created. Not having seen the God of heaven we rely on mirrors to see God, first Christ and then each other. If we see God in one another than we must love one another as if we are loving God. If we want to be the image of God to others, we are brought to that perfection through our love. God is not just a being that simply exist but God is love, so if we are made in the image of God we must love with the love of God, then God is perfected in us. It is in loving that we are most mirroring God to others.
In the world Jesus has returned to the Father and God is never visible so that He is seen with the naked eye. The only way to see God is if we be God for others to see. This is made possible through us when we love. God does for others first, and always seeks others joy. We too must do for others first and seek their joy, even before our own. This is how we mirror God.
Do you see God in others? Are you being God to others?
The only way to see God is if we be God for others to see. This is made possible through us when we love. God does for others first, and always seeks others joy.
