Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 NABRE
Paul is nearing the end of his letter to the community in Galatia and he is challenging them with general principles for Christian conduct. They (and we) should love their neighbor, follow the Spirit and avoid sin, what Paul calls desires of the flesh. Paul is speaking to them (and us) as a community. Christian life is not primarily about individualism but the holiness and salvation of the community. The community is dependent on the individual, but surrounded by a community, individuals will grow in holiness and salvation and the community will prosper. Paul encourages the community to do good for all. He compares our efforts to a harvest, we will reap what we sow. If we sow for ourselves we will not reap much good, but if we sow for the spirit we will reap life eternal. Therefore, we should never tire of doing good and we will in time have a great harvest. Not only will we reap eternal life, but life lived now will be more joyful and fruitful. Living for the spirit not only makes our life better, it makes us better at life. The journey that follows God is a journey that takes all the best steps, and leads to life complete with all the best any life could imagine. So let us never tire of doing good. We will change ourselves and those in our community.
In your day reach out to those around you, establish a relationship, do good for them and add new people in your life putting them first. Building community is fostered by sharing; sow love, let others know you support their good and they can count on you.
What good do you consistently do, day to day? What can you begin doing that will be good for someone else without benefit to you?
We should never tire of doing good and we will in time have a great harvest. Not only will we reap eternal life, but life lived now will be more joyful and fruitful.
