Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7 NABRE
Jesus is teaching those who will listen about the generosity of the Father. He encourages disciples to ask, seek and knock with an expectation that God will respond. It is a teaching that we should have confidence in prayer. We should know that if we go to God in prayer we will receive a favorable response. It sounds like God will give us virtually anything we ask for, or we will find anything we seek or every door we knock on will be open to us. I think we all have some experience that teaches us this is not true. We know from the prayer Jesus taught us that we should be asking for God’s Kingdom to come, God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. If we are disciples with true faith in Jesus and the message He has come to teach us, than our entire being will be aligned with God’s will, God’s way, God’s home. Aligned appropriately with God when we ask we will be asking for something that God wants the world to have, not just us but everyone, and when we receive it we will gladly share it with all who cross our path. When we seek we will find what God needs us to find, and we will share it freely. When we knock it will be God or someone God needs us to help on the other side of the door. God’s response to prayer is always to make the Kingdom of God come to fulfillment. We too will have this as our desire when we fully become a follower of God.
So when you ask, ask for a way to make God’s presence better known. When you seek, seek the means to help others discover a better life in Jesus. When you knock, knock on a door that will open and allow others to discover the love of God.
Do you have confidence in your prayers? Do you pray for yourself or the will of God to be done?
When you ask, ask for a way to make God's presence better known. When you seek, seek the means to help others discover a better life in Jesus.
