Matthew 6:25 – July 21, 2019

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25 NABRE

Jesus is teaching those who will listen. The subject of this section is about storing up treasure in heaven. He wants us to know the more we do for the Kingdom of God, we will create good will and treasure with God. This treasure will serve us much better than anything we could obtain in life. We may worry about what we will eat or wear, but life is so much more than being concerned about superficial needs. We do need to eat and wear clothing, but to spend more than a modicum of time on these things is the wrong focus. Jesus also has concern that we tend to worry about many things, he uses the word “worry” five times in this small section of the text. To worry is to be excessively concerned, anxiety is filling our heart and distracting us from what is important in life. If we are worrying about unimportant things than we lose time from focusing on what is important in life. Here Jesus is pointing out simple needs, we also worry about our job, money, what others think of us. If our heart is filled with these earthly matters we fail to hear God who wants to speak to us about what is important. If we are busy doing what the world says is important we don’t have time or focus to sit and listen to God. We should sit quietly every day and be present to God so that we may hear God’s plan for our life.

We all have a purpose, if we are not hearing our purpose from God we can’t possibly know what we should be doing to fulfill our role. Stop spending excessive time on things less important than what God has for us.

Do you sit quietly with God for a significant amount of time each day? What do you worry about most frequently?
