The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little. 1 Peter 5:10 NABRE
Peter is ending his letter and concludes with a powerful promise of God’s faithful care. He consoles us saying God’s grace is sufficient help through whatever suffering we may undergo. God calls us into His eternal glory through Christ, this is not just eternal life, but glory. God has an eternal place for us, and He will raise us up in glory as He did Christ. God restores us, fixing us in our suffering. God confirms us, affirming us in our faith. God strengthens us, giving us what we need to continue. God establishes us, bringing us fully into communion with Him. God is a Father watching over us as we suffer and He is a God who knows about suffering. Suffering opens us up to a different way, it is things happening to us against our will. Suffering may truly be defined as a loss of control. When we love it leads us to giving up control, which leads to suffering. But, no one gives up more control than God. God’s freedom for us and His great love are God’s outpouring and self-emptying. This freedom and great love mean God gives up control, In fact He hardly ever holds on to control and thus suffers. We suffer when we love, because love requires giving up control. When we love God we give over our control and God rewards us. Suffering FOR God is rewarded with glory, as well as we are restored, confirmed, strengthened and established.
We are promised glory and restoration in God who knows we will suffer in our commitment to the message we are asked to share. We grow from suffering, and we are restored by God through love, to glory!
Do you avoid suffering? Have you suffered for those you love?
We are promised glory and restoration in God who knows we will suffer in our commitment to the message we are asked to share.
