Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 NABRE
In John’s Gospel, Jesus gives a farewell discourse to His disciples that is rather lengthy. We are looking at part of the farewell discourse in the section with the quoted verse. Jesus tells his disciples when he leaves the Father will send an Advocate that will teach them and remind them of all he has taught them. He wishes them peace. It is the promise of peace in the biblical sense, “shalom,” which is peace, well-being, everything is right. It is a blessing of reconciliation that God promised to bestow upon His people in His final act of salvation. Jesus’ peace is fruit of his relationship with the Father, into which He will bring his disciples. It is a supernatural peace that arises from the total love for the Father. It is therefore unlike the peace of the world, which usually does not include God. Jesus calls the disciples to a confident, trusting faith that promises them the peace that comes from obeying the Father and knowing His love. We see this peace in action after Jesus’ resurrection and the risen Christ stands among His disciples wishing peace which drives out their fear. It is not a peace that comes from the world, it is a peace the removes the things that trouble hearts. Jesus continues the discourse by telling the disciples He is going away and they will not speak after he leaves. So they will need His peace.
Peace is most fulfilling when we receive it as Jesus gives. There is much we worry about, our jobs, children, safety, security and this worry takes away our peace. Pray to the Lord of peace and have a heart that has no trouble or fear.
Have you felt the peace of Christ? Do you pray for peace?
