The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:6-8 NABRE
Paul in his letter to the Romans in this section is speaking about life in the spirit and life in the flesh. A life in the spirit is a way of saying the Spirit of God lives in those who are believers. The life in the flesh is a life apart from God and his grace, essentially it is a life where the sinful nature of a person is more apt to come through. A person who lives according to the flesh habitually yields to sinful and selfish desires in everyday life. Everything a person living in the flesh does has a human precedent and takes place on a purely human level. By living in the flesh life becomes about death, not actual death, but a spiritual death. It leads a person away from God and toward spiritual death. On the other hand a person living in the Spirit has life and peace. We can discern from other passages that Paul is speaking about eternal life and peace everlasting. We see Paul emphasizing the point saying the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God, not submitting to the law of God, acting in the flesh cannot please God. Acting in the flesh is a person’s attempt to please themselves. Unfortunately those pleasures are momentary and the person is seeking more; never satisfied by what life in the flesh has to offer.
To live a life fulfilled we must be believers and live knowing the Spirit of God is within us. We can call on the Spirit to live holy lives and discern what we should be doing daily. Call on the Spirit to lead you day to day and you will have life and peace.
Do you seek the Spirit daily? Are you including the Spirit in all your daily habits?
To live a life fulfilled we must be believers and live knowing the Spirit of God is within us.
