They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar on eagles’ wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint. Isaiah 40:31 NABRE
Isaiah forty begins with a voice proclaiming the Lord’s consolation. The voice goes on to call on the prophet himself to proclaim that the word of God and His message of salvation will endure forever. This is an oracle addressed to the people of Jerusalem who have been held in exile in Babylon. They have been held captive for years. The time has come for them, with the Lord’s help, to set out on the return journey. The journey is addressed throughout the chapter. The voice speaking in the name of the Lord boosts their morale: it won’t be a difficult journey; they will find a way opened up for them which will bring them to the glory of the Lord. On the way they will see a wonderful experience of God’s power and they will be filled with hope. In the second half of the proclamation the prophet speaks in the name of the Lord. Human plans can only go so far, but the word of God stands forever. Power can wither like the “flowers in the field” when the “breath of the Lord blows upon them,” when the goodness of the Lord is challenged. The people should trust the power of God who comes to protect. We see the use of the word “flock” being applied to God’s people with Him as Shepherd. Their hope is in the Lord who will renew their strength, they will fly like an eagle, not grow weary and not grow faint. The people return successfully to their home with the Lord’s help.
We are called to trust in God. If we hope in God we can cope with difficulties without getting tired. It is God who loves us and wants us to live a life of soaring not suffering. Thus trusting in the Lord is the way to fly like an eagle.
Are you encouraged by God? Are you renewed in the hands of the Lord?
