If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. 1 John 1:9 NABRE
John in this first letter opens by challenging the reader to live differently. We read that God is the light and in Him there is no darkness. To have fellowship with God we too must be in the light and not walk in darkness. To walk in darkness means to live a sinful life. By walking in the light we are indicating we are near the source of holiness and righteousness, goodness and truth; which of course is God in whom there is nothing unholy or unrighteous, evil or false. Being in the light we are near the source of light and we have fellowship with those who also walk in the light, i.e. with one another. Through the fellowship living in the light we are cleansed of our sin by the sacrifice of Jesus. There are those who think they have no sin, are without sin; but John challenges this position saying they are just deceiving themselves. We all have the nature of sin, we can struggle to avoid sin, but without the grace of God John believes being free of sin is impossible. However, when we do acknowledge our sin, God who is faithful will forgive and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. God in forgiving sin is being faithful to who He is, to His promise that whoever comes to Him in repentance will be forgiven. God is gracious, merciful and bestows grace on those who seek reconciliation for their sin. Thus God forgives us and cleanses us, a type of purification and we again walk in the light, a new way of life.
God does all the work to grace us and ready us for a new life. We only need to be honest and welcoming of God, the true light.
Are you open to live a new life? Are you willing to walk in the light, all you do is seen?
God does all the work to grace us and ready us for a new life. We only need to be honest and welcoming of God, the true light.
