for: “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, and the flower wilts;” 1 Peter 1:24 NABRE
Peter is writing to people in Asia Minor who are experiencing trials and persecutions. In the section of the letter with the quoted verse Peter speaks of two births. He first indicates they have been converted to become followers of Jesus, through a purification process which likely means Baptism. He indicates they have been born anew, not of perishable seed but from imperishable seed, the word of God. In the quoted verse Peter is telling them all flesh is like grass, it has its time but then withers and fades away, or the flower wilts after its moment of glory. But being born of the word of the Lord, they will remain forever. It is a message of eternal life for disciples, followers of Jesus. All of us who follow Jesus have two lives, we are born in flesh and we are born in spirit, the life in the flesh will fade but the life in the spirit will never fade. For us death is walking through a door to a life with God, in the Kingdom of God. Peter begins the letter to a suffering people with this great hope that no matter what happens, they will be fine. Jesus’ path through death and resurrection is what is in store for them, so they shouldn’t let anything or anyone interrupt their love for one another or their hope.
It is a common message heard from those who witnessed Jesus’ life and spoke of Him in speech and writing. Jesus is the Messiah who brings death to death and we as disciples have the same hope as the people Peter is writing to as followers of Jesus. We should also spread the word so that others may join the brotherhood/sisterhood of Jesus and have hope as well. If you wonder why the verse is in quotes just ask.
What is life without hope? What is your hope for those in your life?
