In peace I will lie down and fall asleep, for you alone, Lord, make me secure. Psalms 4:9 NABRE
Psalm 4 is a nice psalm to have available to say before bed. It is a prayer that acknowledges God’s protection with confidence. It opens with a confident appeal from the psalmist to God, followed by verses that tell others to trust in the Lord and ends with the quoted verse; laying down to sleep, not alone because the Lord makes the psalmist secure. In the heart of the psalm we read that there is no reason to suffer or fall for vain words or lies. It is ok to be angry but do not sin. When you lay in bed at night seek out peace in the quiet. Offer what you can to God, putting your trust in the Lord. There are those who are looking for good but don’t know the Lord or that He gives more joy than having all you can drink or eat. This is a wonderful prayer that directs you to look within for consolation and peace. Through the day there is much that pulls us off schedule or causes us consternation. At the end of the day it is good to settle down, to sit quietly and to seek that peace that comes from within and from God. Turn your eyes and look within yourself, there you will find the Lord who will never leave you alone. The less consolation you receive externally the more you will receive from within, it is a great gift from God. The Lord hears when you call. His concerns for you are total and He is never far, you can trust in Him alone. Particularly when you are suffering, the Lord stands by.
You may already have a prayer routine at night but if you don’t consider this psalm as the start of something you do at night, to bring yourself peace and assurance that God cares about you completely.
Do you come to know peace before bed? Are you able to sit in the quiet of the night for consolation?
