Hence, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 NABRE
Paul in the letter to the Romans speaks on many subjects as this is a letter of introduction. He plans to travel to Rome and meet the community but first sends this letter of greeting sharing his teaching about God. In chapter eight Paul speaks of the Spirit. The Spirit is the presence and power of God in the life of the believer, the animating principle of Christian life and spirituality. It is the indwelling of the Spirit that makes it possible for us to live victoriously as a disciple of Jesus. Paul begins with a headline; “there is no condemnation for a baptized believer,” since they now live in Christ Jesus. United to Christ, believers are delivered from the divine judgement which condemns sinners. Although humanity has a sinful nature, it is through the strength of the Spirit that we can avoid sin and remain in Christ. Paul speaks of the law of the Spirit, which could also be stated the principle of the Spirit. Paul contrast the law of the Spirit with the law of sin and death. The law of the Spirit liberates us from bondage. The law of sin and death is a hindrance to the faithful moving us toward death in the flesh. It is a law that brings us into captivity. Any sin holds us in bondage, keeping us from freedom. Jesus sends the Spirit, our liberator.
The headline here is key, there is no condemnation for the faithful believer. We have the Spirit living in us as followers and thus we are liberated and free. This requires living our belief each day, acting as a disciple whose life proclaims the message of a liberated person. Our life should be a sharing of the good news of Jesus.
Do you understand this blessing? Do live free or in captivity?
