The just walk in integrity; happy are their children after them! Proverbs 20:7 NABRE
Solomon’s wisdom ties integrity to the blessedness of children. Again, we see the word “just” which in biblical language is used interchangeably with righteous; to be upright, in a state of acceptability to God, to have a moral conduct in conformity to God’s will. Jesus teaching his disciples has a blessing which reads, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6) To thirst is more necessary than hunger, from the first day of life we drink and in our death we are thirsty. To thirst and hunger is a profound aspiration which God has placed within us. It means we are never completely satisfied or replete. To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to have deep in the center of our animalistic self the desire for God’s will, for God’s plan to come through in humanity. So if we are righteous and walk in integrity, in other words, we let our just side, our righteousness lead us, then our children will be happy, or taking the term from Jesus teaching on the mount, blessed. There are many things we can hand on to our children, a moral example, an inheritance of money and property, but happiness, blessedness that would seem to be out of our reach. Yet wisdom is teaching says otherwise; we can bring our children happiness, if we live righteous lives with integrity. This could be a fantastic bestowal for our children, even if we only have spiritual children, children we pray over, or are god-parents in their life.
Be righteous, have integrity, bestow happiness. You could not be more of a blessing to your children than to guarantee their happiness through God.
Are you righteous, just? Can you think of something better to bestow on children than happiness?
